2013 Range Rover revealed

$

The British automaker Land Rover has finally lifted the curtain on the all-new fourth-generation of the Range Rover. The revamped luxury SUV is lighter, bigger and more luxurious than the model it replaces. Without any doubt, the most significant change has to do with the all-aluminum monocoque body which is 39% lighter compared to the traditional steel body of the third-gen model. Aside from this, the front and rear chassis architecture is also made from aluminum. Thanks to the use of these materials, the Range Rover is up to 420 kg (926 lbs) lighter than the outgoing model, depending on the version. Another important change is related to the completely reworked four-corner air suspension that should provide a much nicer driving experience.

The 2013 Range Rover also benefits from the second generation of the Terrain Response system developed by Land Rover which is capable of analyzing the driving conditions and based on that it automatically chooses the most suitable settings for that terrain. We should also mention that the wheelbase is now longer, while the rear legroom has improved by an impressive 4.6 inches (118 mm). A novelty for the British SUV would have to be the two-seat Executive Class seating configuration which extends the center console all the way to the back.

2013 Range Rover

The version that will be sold in Europe is going to be available with a choice of three engines, an updated V8 supercharged unit, along with the 3.0-liter TDV6 and the larger 4.4-liter TDV8 power unit. For now we know that the U.S. model will be offered with a naturally-aspirated V8 5.0-liter engine. All these engines are linked to an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox, so there aren’t any manual transmissions offered.

2013 Range Rover

The release date of the 2013 Range Rover is December for North America and early next year for the rest of the world. The vehicle will be available for order starting with this September. More info about the SUV, along with pricing details, will be announced at the upcoming Paris Motor Show next month.

UK carmaker Land Rover has unveiled the refreshed Freelander after the 2010 facelift. It features xenon LED headlights and taillights, while the front lamps now have a different graphic. LR used a bright chrome trim for decorating the fog lights and the front grille, while for the new model year customers are able to order the updated Freelander with one of the three new colors: Aintree Green, Mauritius Blue and Havana. Inside the cabin it comes with an entirely new center console that replaces the numerous buttons found on the outgoing model. The manual handbrake has also been removed and replaced with the electronic parking brake, while the previous Terrain Response dial is gone in favor for buttons found behind the gearlever.

The Land Rover Freelander also gains new technologies in the form of keyless start, a voice activation system (called “Say What You See”) and a rear-view camera. The Meridian sound system found at first only on the Evoque is now available in two configurations: 380W 11-speakers and 825W 17-speakers. The standard Freelander comes equipped with an 80W 8-speaker audio system.

The entry-level S model comes with cloth seats, followed by GS with full leather upholstery and the XS which is equipped with the 380W Meridian sound system we’ve mentioned. Also available is the Dynamic model that has a different body kit, new 10-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels and three interior colors to choose from.

2013 Land Rover Freelander

Land Rover hasn’t made any changes to the engine lineup so the Freelander is offered with the same three 4-cylinder 2.2-liter turbodiesels: TD4 (148 hp), SD4 (187 hp) and the manual 2WD only eD4 (148 hp). The most frugal engine is the eD4 which returns 47.1 mpg UK and has CO2 emissions of only 158 g/km.

2013 Land Rover Freelander

LR did not reveal the full pricing information, but the base model has a starting price of 23,700 pounds, making it 1,000 pricier than the outgoing model. The updated Freelander is scheduled to hit the UK market this October.

One of the very few cars in the world available right now that has managed to remain a true classic and stick to its roots is the legendary Defender. Land Rover has announced this week the refresh of this model for 2013 which brings Havana and Barolo Black paint finishes for the exterior, along with three additional options. The British automaker mentioned in the press release that the Firenze Red color can be ordered in combination with the Santorini Black roof and the Baltic Blue with the Indus Silver. Also a novelty for the 2013 Defender would have to be the body-hugging seat design which is wrapped partially in leather. It has the company’s logo on the backrest and it is available not only for the driver, but also for the front passenger.

There’s also a third new option introduced with the 2013 model in the form of an upgrade for the vehicle’s sound system that brings an Alpine 150W low-profile subwoofer with 10cm coaxial speakers, as well as support for Bluetooth.

Land Rover has prepared a limited edition of the Freelander 2. It’s called Black & White and only 600 units will be built. It has a starting price of 22,495 GBP which makes it 1,205 GBP more affordable than the model this limited edition is based on. Underneath its skin is the entry-level S model that in its standard configuration comes with an 8-speaker sound system, start button and DAB.

This special model adds to that list a gloss black front grille, door handles and side vents, as well as LED daytime running lights. It sits on a new set of 17-inch alloy wheels and has been equipped with a privacy glass.

As its name suggest, Land Rover will be selling this special edition in either a Santorini Black or a Fuji White hue. On the inside it gets Bluetooth and a black leather trim as standard equipment. It will be sold in two variants, starting with the cheaper FWD 2.2-liter eD4 diesel version that provides 148 hp and comes connected to a 6-speed manual that enables it to return 47.1 mpg UK and have CO2 emissions of 158 g/km.

The same engine goes under the hood of the pricier four-wheel drive TD4 model that can be had with an automatic transmission but with the manual it’s a bit more economical, returning 45.6 mpg UK and with CO2 emissions of 165 g/km. As standard, all variants get the stop/start system.

What we have here in these two photos is the new generation of the Range Rover Sport which Land Rover will introduce towards the end of the month at the 2013 New York Auto Show. Looking basically like a bigger Evoque, the new Range Rover Sport comes with a considerably aggressive front fascia featuring slender headlights, a prominent front grille, as well as a sporty lower intake.

We also notice ventilated front fenders, a clamshell hood, a tailgate-mounted spoiler, a dual exhaust setup and black plastic cladding to make the car look more rugged.

There aren’t any details about the engine lineup but it’s safe to say it will borrow the power units from the 2013 Range Rover, which means we should expect a V6 3.0-liter supercharged with 340 hp (253 kW) and a more powerful V8 5.0-liter supercharged pumping out 510 hp (380 kW). Diesel choices will include a V6 3.0-liter with 225 hp (190 kW) and a V8 4.4-liter capable of outputting 335 hp (250 kW).

Full official and confirmed details will be available when the car makes its debut at the New York Auto Show. Stay tuned.

Full details about the 2014 Range Rover Sport

Last year Land Rover introduced the new generation of the Range Rover and now time has come to present the revamped Sport variant which some say looks like a bigger Evoque. It will hit dealerships sometime this September and is considered by the British automaker as the “fastest, most agile and most responsive” model that they have ever produced. If we were to compare it with the outgoing Range Rover Sport, the new variant is 62 mm longer, while at the same time being 149 mm longer than its bigger brother, the regular Range Rover. Its wheelbase has been elongated by 178mm which has enabled Land Rover to offer a 5+2 seating layout.

Compared to its predecessor, the new model is no less than 1,102 lbs (500 kg) lighter if we compare the old V8-powered model to the new V6-engined variant. If we were to compare the V6 versions, the new generation has lost an impressive 925 lbs (420 kg) from its curb weight. Land Rover says the 2014 Range Rover Sport has a drag coefficient of 0.34 thanks to a near-flush glazing, smoother underfloor panel and the movable vanes built into the cooling system.

Upon launch, Land Rover will offer two power units which are equipped with stop/start system. The first one is a SDV6 3.0-liter diesel producing 288 bhp while the other is a beefier V8 5.0-liter supercharged unit pumping out 503 hp. In 2014 the car will be offered with a TDV6 diesel rated at 254 bhp, a SDV8 4.4-liter churning 334 hp and a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine as well which promises to provide just about the same performances as the old diesel V8.

Regardless of the chosen engine, those ponies are transferred to a permanent 4×4 system with the help of an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. Customers can order the 2014 Range Rover Sport with a single-speed transfer case that has a 42:58 percent torque distribution or they can get the car with a two-speed transfer case featuring low and high range, along with a 50:50 torque split.

The vehicle has been fitted with the company’s fifth generation of the air spring suspension that takes a lot of the components from the one fitted to the regular Range Rover. For the Sport variant it has been updated to allow better handling, whereas in the Range Rover is tweaked for a more luxurious feel.

As far as the interior cabin is concerned, it looks a lot like the one its bigger brother has, but with a 20mm lowered driving position, head-up display (optional) and a wide variety of colors, textures and themes. Since it’s longer than its predecessor, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it offers 24mm more knee room.

Moving on to prices, the version equipped with a SDV6 engine starts from 59,995 pounds and goes all the way up to 74,995 pounds. Prices will go down to approximately 51,550 pounds in 2014 when the TDV6 will be offered. If you are willing to spend 81,550 pounds, you can get the flagship V8 5.0-liter Supercharged Autobiography model.
